At the same time the RU was tightening up its organization. A good deal of study, discussion and attention was given to the Marxist-Leninist concept of democratic-centralism, particularly the need for a strong central leadership. In a meeting in mid-September 1972, the National Interim Committee – a grouping with considerable initiative that met more frequently than its Central Committee – codified their decision, which had created a secretariat, a group of four people tasked with running the day-to-day operations of the group. The secretariat, based in Chicago, constituted the group’s most influential leaders. It included the veteran leaders from the Bay Area, Bob Avakian, Barry Greenberg, and Mary Lou Greenberg. The fourth member was Don Wright.56
